Australia is home to some of the world's great casinos, hotels and resorts.
While the land down under has over a dozen land based casinos, there's only three that both rate highly and grab the majority of headlines on a global stage. Enter James Packer's Crown Casino in Melbourne, Tabcorp's Star City in Sydney, and Jupiters Hotel & Casino on the Gold Coast.
Media Man and Gambling911 take our eye in the sky look at the landscape of the Aussie land based casino sector and bring you up to speed with what's news down under...
Readers will be aware that there's a "casino war" in the land of kangaroos, koalas and goannas at the moment. You would have to be Blind Fredy not to know about the ultra competitive showdown (and hunt for whales and dolphins) between Packer's Crown Casino down south and Tabcorp's Star City in 'Sin City' Sydney.
Crown Casino and Star City are following the global trend, largely driven forward from Las Vegas and Macau, of offering a total entertainment experience... not just gambling... you know, slots, poker, table games and the like. Whales aka high-rollers, have also demanded the changing face of the sector. Don't get us wrong, the gambling aspect remains vital to the business model and to the punters, but for a variety of reasons Australian casino kings have employed a more holistic models. The reasons include being more government friendly, legal eagle elements and complimenting the larger casino, entertainment and lifestyle realms.
Some of the ramped up services and offerings as part of the industry development include but are not limited to:
Entertainment complex upgrades (including securing more world class acts, more often, to attract the crowds and keep all clients and business partners happy)
Hotel suite refurbishments
Private gambling room upgrades for high rolling VIP's
Sports bar upgrades
Enhanced security - technology and more staff
Gulf Stream Jets aka Lear Jets for international high rollers in a hurry and who demand and casino afford the best

Marina Bay Sands vs. James Packer’s City of Dreams Macau
The land based casino wars continue to heat up, and 'Our James'... Australian James Packer is in the thick of the action.
Packer's Crown Casino faces increased competition down under in Australia from Sydney's revamped Star City, and now Sands has opened in Singapore, in a move that insiders say will lure whales and dolphins away from Crown Macau, but don't underestimate the loyalty to Packer. Many have bet against the Aussie - Asia Pacific casino king before and lost. Media Man and Gambling911 with the story...
The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore is one of the biggest and most expensive casinos every built. Having opened its doors two days ago, throwing down the gauntlet... the dust is just starting to settle. Insiders say James Packer is at the top of the list of other operators who need to stay on guard and answer the challenge.
The US based gambling monster Las Vegas Sands constructed the complex, understood to have a price tag of $US5.5 billion (AUD$5.9 billion), on Singapore's prime waterfront. Eventually it will sport some 2500 hotel rooms and suites, but how many will be used, and by whom, remain questions front of mind.
Like many modern day casinos, they are incorporating more entertainment themes and amenities, getting away from being a pure gambling den. Try your luck on the cleo and monopoly slots, Wheel Of Fortune and table games, then head on over to the theme parks and concert stages. Stage left, stage right.
CEO of Marina Bay Sands, Thomas Arasi, says look forward to the opening of 963 hotel rooms, part of a shopping mall and convention centre, celeb chef restaurants, dining outlets and no doubt a few other surprises.
The powers that be are rolling out the finishing touches in phases.
Phase 2 includes the Sands SkyPark on the rooftop, Event Plaza along Marina Bay, a retail plaza and additional dining amenities. Can't wait for the 60-seat restaurant spearheaded by chef master Tetsuya Wakuda. Mark your calenders for 23rd June.
The project is owned by worlds leading casino tycoon Steve Wynn, the brains and money behind the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas as well as developing the Cotai Strip and Venetian Resort in Macau.
Marina Bay Sands, the second casino in Singapore, following the Sentosa Island project, will be run by a former Crown executive, Mr Andrew McDonald, who has also represented Malaysian developer Genting and who has the experience and apparent connections to lure gamblers (whales and dolphins on the radar) away from Packer's Crown. Just play nice McDonald, or bad fortune and 'Underbelly' themes may get written into the script. We think the region is big enough for all to do well, even prosper, so lets keep it friendly competition, with emphasis on the "friendly".
A Media Man birdie reckons the new casino is surely targeting the same patrons as Crown Melbourne, some understood to also frequent Crown Macau. Cast the rods far and wide boys... you don't know what you'll catch on the other end! Primarily Oriental high rolling VIP's plus. Singapore is home to one or two of the whales.
Singapore enjoys its status as a financial and private banking icon and this is just another measuring stick whales and dolphins are understood to take into consideration.
Packer connected Crown is well aware of the threat from Singapore dragon by throwing some $212 million into further upgrading its VIP facilities to appeal to high-rollers. Excuse me sir, jot that down... Mr Packer and Billionaire Inc want your business. Can we offer you some lucky money, and perhaps some lady company for you're pleasant stay with us? A Media Man insider whispered, "I think some new games are going to be released... catch a fishy and catch a pussy slot, or something. James Bond would be proud of what these Crown boys are coming up with to help counter ... and count her!"
It plans to extend the casino's Mahogany Room by 50 per cent and build a new exclusive gambling club containing private suites.
Singapore, with its two super casinos, is unlikely to overtake Macau, says our spies, but may steal or at least borrows high-rollers from China as operators shift premium business to the city-state, taking advantage of an effective tax rate of 12% compared with roughly 39% in the Chinese territory.
Neighbouring Malaysia's sole casino, run by Genting Singapore's parent, Genting Bhd is also tipped to lose some business to Singapore's newer casinos with extras plus, for those who can afford the best.
Marina Bay Sands has also teamed up with coach operators to offer 130 daily trips from various Malaysian cities to its kingdom, but make not mistake... whales and a good catch of dolphins on the side, are what this is about. It's about return on investment and the bottom line... oh, and happy customers also.
May all fortunes be showered with good luck and let's keep the "casino war" friendly shall we. Still plenty of fish in the sea (but only so many super sized whales). Happy hunting and good punting.

Media Man Asia: 41 Injured in Macau May Day Rally
HONG KONG (AFP) - Clashes that broke out during a May Day rally in Macau injured 41 people, including two journalists and 32 policemen, the gambling hub's government said Sunday.
"Some protesters did not follow the route specified earlier by the police and clashed with the officers, resulting in injuries to 41 people -- three members of the public, two journalists, four protesters and 32 policemen," the statement said.
Three people -- a member of the public, a protester and a policeman -- were hospitalised, it added.
Riot police in Macau used water cannon and pepper spray in Saturday's clashes with hundreds of protesters who fought with stones and bottles.
The fighting erupted after protesters tried to force their way through police barricades to march along a main road where Macau's main casinos and tourist attractions are located.
Earlier radio reports put the number of injured at eight.
Local media reported that nearly 1,000 people joined the march, to demand job protection and tough action against illegal workers in the southern Chinese territory, the only place in China that allows casino gambling.
They also demanded action against corruption as well as financial help to offset inflation, a growing worry as soaring gambling revenue raises prices in the former Portuguese colony, which was returned to Chinese rule in 1999.
In nearby Hong Kong several thousand protesters marched through the streets to demand a minimum wage of 33 Hong Kong dollars (4.20 US) an hour and better job protection.

Underbelly Cops A Beating At Crown Casino Logies, by Greg Tingle - 3rd May 2010
Australia's night of nights, The Logies, took centre stage last night at James Packer owned Crown Casino, down under in Melbourne Australia.
Ever wondered if the Logies were "rigged"? We didn't, but know it crossed the mind of some, given the strong history between Crown Casino owner Packer, Network Nine and ACP Magazines (publisher of TV Week). Last night should have answered that question without a doubt.
Beloved 'Underbelly', Network Nine darling and dear friend to the Gambling911 readership copped an absolute flogging, copping a donut... that's right 0. Belly up you might say, but the show returns to TV next Sunday night, expected to once again draw in huge audience numbers.
Underbelly had five nominations across the popular and outstanding categories and was expected to dominate!
Ray Meagher picked up the Gold Logie.
The veteran Home And Away actor triumphed over Packed To The Rafters actress Rebecca Gibney to take the coveted award.
He also beat his Home And Away co-star Esther Anderson, Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation's Shaun Micallef, Good News Week's Paul McDermott, Rove McManus and the ABC's Wil Anderson and Adam Hills.
"In 1965 at the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane I won a chook raffle," a beaming Meagher said as he took to the stage.
"It's been a long time between drinks".
Host Bert Newton could not hide his feelings about Meagher's big win.
"I have had the opportunity over the years to present many Gold Logies," he said.
"None have given me more joy than to present this to Ray Meagher."
Bert's son Matthew (Mr Asia in Underbelly: A Tale Of Two Cities) is currently in rehab.
'Underbelly' star Firass Diriani (plays John Ibrahim) was in attendance, and was very well behaved we understand. Dirani recently picked up that Cleo 'Bachelor Of The Year' award.
Sigrid Thornton who plays a hardened federal officer in Underbelly: The Golden Mile was also in attendance and also enjoyed the gala evening incident free.
Nine Network won only one Logie for the NRL Footy Show.
"Well Channel Nine is certainly cleaning up this year, aren't they?", joked host Bert Newton.
Bragging rights of the corporate variety remain in full swing...Packer's Crown Casino certainly won its "casino war" last night against Sydney's Tabcorp owned Star City Casino, but Star City is planning a counter attack, so don't change your dial!
Media Man spies advise no plastic handcuffs were needed last night for footballers, cricketers, or any other guests.
Loyal readers, we're sorry that 'Underbelly' with its strong gambling themes and all got shot down, at Crown Casino to add salt into the wound. None the less, here's the winners list to help ease the pain...
